Abstract

The assessment of "in situ" acoustic insulation requires a lengthy procedure according to ISO 140-5. The testing cost prevents; the widespread enforcement of acceptabie limits; as a policy for the protection of housing against noise. On the other hand, the need for such regulations in Chile has forced the design of a strategy that could satisfy the following criteria: Assessment of the final acoustic conditions as perceived by the user. Compulsory testing oniy wherc there is a reasonable chance of inadequate: insulation. Option for a simplified test not less demanding but agreeing with ISO 140-5. Simplified test with minimum time and equipment requirernems. Several standards rely on dBA ratings, using normalized traffic noise as standard source to avoid for spectrum sensitive inaecuracy. The ISO 717 standard also suggest the use of a correction terrn, which is always positive for low frequency noise sources equivalent to traffic noise. ~ever, there is no way for qualif~ing noise sources as equivalent to traffic noise. Our proposal was to verify the low frequeney content of the testing noise source by means of the différence between A and C levei measurements. This difference is 4 to 8 dB for most traffic noise spectra. Simulations were carried out to test lhe hypothesis that verif~ing this différence was enough condition for validating the simplified methoci. Results; are presented and compared to fui] ISO 140-5 tests, The estimated performance and advantages of this strategy are díscussed.
