Abstract

Due to the increase of corrosion damage, there is a strong motivation to develop better models to predict the service life of a structure. For structures exposed to marine environment, one of the process that may trigger the onset of corrosion of steel embedded in concrete is the ingress of chloride ions, which eventually reach the reinforcement causing the rupture of the passive film. Many laboratory tests have been used with the purpose of estimating the diffusion coefficient of chloride ions into concrete. In this paper, a methodology is suggested for the interpretation of immersion test results. With the chloride-content profiles determined after the immersion test, a diffusion coefficient can be estimated at each point for which there is a measurement of the chloride content. These samples are used to calculate the mean and standard deviation of the diffusion coefficients of each of the concrete specimens. The reliability analysis provides as output estimates of the probability of corrosion initiation for each specimen at a given time. The analysis is performed for several lightweight high-strength concrete mixtures.
