Abstract

This proposal had been developed as a Diploma Project at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of the University of São Paulo. The design project consists of an environmentally responsive recycling facility integrated with an urban park located on an ancient industrial site by Tamanduateí River, in São Paulo. Besides recovering a degraded area of the metropolis through the reactivation of the industry, this proposal aims to deal with environmental issues. The implementation of a plastics and aluminum recycling plant deals with the problem of appropriate solid waste disposal in the cities, acting also as an environment education facility. Moreover, the project has active impact on the local microclimate. Through careful location of vegetation and water bodies it was intended to ameliorate the region’s harsh microclimate as a hole. This project’s concern with the environment is expressed not only through the reduction of energy consumption and microclimatic soothing, but also through the creation of a complex dedicated to the population’s environmental education, where citizens may learn in a practical way, following the industrial process
