Abstract

In the last six years several activities related to sustainability in the built environment were started and conducted at the Department of Civil Engineering (more specifically at NORIE, dealing with construction), at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in the southmost State of Brazil. The academic activities ranged from the simple inclusion of sustainability principles into undergraduate disciplines to research programmes on sustainability for MSc and PhD students. The academic activities are developed in parallel with others, all inspired on the strong appeal from real community necessities, mainly those associated to the most economically deprived. These necessities span from the design of buildings and communities better adapted to local social and economical reality, to energy conservation and wastes management. This paper describes some of NORIE´s teaching activities and, in some depth, some of activities related to the design of CETHS - Experimental Centre for Sustainable Housing Technologies.
