Abstract

There is a growing interest on environmental impacts of buildings and construction, in general. Among these, there are the impacts directly related to building materials. In Brazil, few are the studies that assess these impacts. These studies are of major importance to define requirements for the choice of environmentally sound materials. The purpose of this research is to characterise the main impacts of the production of ceramic bricks, tiles and blocks in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, South of Brazil, aiming at pointing out environmental initiatives to the industries and potential improvements in the production phase of these materials. A multiple case study, applied to a group of 8 small, medium and large size industries, was performed. The data were obtained with the application of surveys in the selected industries. The main environmental impacts assessed were: raw materials, energy sources, wastes, CO2 emissions, working conditions and final product. In conclusion, the studied industries showed low environmental impact strategies, like the use renewable energy sources, wastes of other industries being incorporated into raw materials and being used as a fuel. Further reductions in environmental impact include: diminishing losses in the production process and improvements in the working and environmental conditions in industry.
