Abstract

The objective of this work is to present and build criteria to the architectural project of low-cost housing, based on tests carried out in a prototype of a single-family low-cost house, built adopting measures of enhancement of the thermal performance. This prototype is part of a research project that seeks to improve methods of evaluation of thermal behavior in low-cost housing. The prototype is 50 m², and was constructed according to demands of a structural ceramic-masonry building system which allows future increases of built area, avoiding wastes and is proper to be performed by dweller’s working groups. The optimization of thermal behavior, was obtained through the ventilation area which was determined to be 20% of internal floor area. The positions of openings were defined according to the solar trajectory in order to obtain crossed ventilation, driving air mass from zones of high to low pressure. The entrance area of ventilation was calculated to be the equivalent of the exit area. The thickness of walls and roof, which is made of ceramic tiles and a concrete paving stone, are in conformity of the latest proposed standards. The partial results confirm the improvement of thermal performance.
