Abstract

The system of suburban electrical trains of the Metropolitan Region of Recife (MRR) was built 16 years ago, in 1984. Recife is the capital city of Pernambuco, situated in the northeast of Brazil. This system compound of approximately 20 Km of two way tracks used about 79,000 ties of prestressed concrete for the assembling of the rails. At the time, in the world and mainly in our region, we did not have any idea of what High Performance Concrete (HPC) would be, but the types of concrete with 50.0, 60.0 MPa of compressive strength or more were already used in some developed centers, while in our region, we used to use concretes under 20.0 MPa. Due to a specification that demanded high compressive strength, together with a process of manufacturing and a limited schedule for the system conclusion, we obtained an average compressive strength of 65.0 MPa, on the 28th days – This strength had never been imagined in our region before. After 16 years of system operation, this concrete and the ties were tested to evaluate their performance through mechanic and durability trials of samples taking from inside the ties in use.
