Resumo

Non point source pollution is one of major problems in hydrologic systems today, mainly because of the difficulties to understand, quantify, and control the relating process as they affect whole watersheds. Created, restored, and natural wetlands may contribute substantially to the water quality improvement in watersheds, since they are adequately located and not over loaded with pollutants (Motta Marques, 1993). Application of the correct amount of pollution that a particular wetland can deal with needs information about the system biotic and nonbiotic factors responsible for the water's quality improvement potential. Macrophytes are one of the major factors affecting water quality in wetlands and information on specific requirements for macrophyte establishing related to nonbiotic and autoecological plant conditions are important management tools in natural and constructed wetlands.
