Abstract

The addition of pozzolans to improve the strength and the durability of concrete and mortars has been widely used. These materials can act physically and/or chemically through the pozzolanic reaction. Among the several admixtures used, the Rice-husk ash (RHA) has shown excellent results, and is considered by many researchers as a ´superpozzolan`. In Brazil estimates for the 1996/1997 harvest say that 166,416 metric tons of this material were produced, and most of it was discarded causing several environmental problems. This paper presents results on aspects of the durability of concretes containing RHA made at 850ºC through a water absorption test and compressive strength. Five water/cement (W/C) ratios (from 0.30 to 0.80) and five proportions of admixture (from 0 to 20%) were studied. Results show that the use of this RHA (unlike highly reactive RHA, this RHA was particully crystalline hence not very effective in its pozzolanic activity) was not effective in limiting the rate of water absorption through the capillary effect.
