Abstract

Concrete constructions in the Amazon region often show signs of premature degradation, and the corrosion of steel is the most serious problem observed. The high temperature and humidity levels in the region when combined with the use of high permeability concrete are responsible for a large number of the decomposition problems found. Moreover, the aggregates available in the region possess low quality and make it difficult to obtain high performance concretes. This paper investigates the possibility of producing high performance concretes in the Amazon region with the addition of silica fume and metakaolin. The performance of mixture with and without pozzolans was evaluated through their compressive strength properties and through the rate of penetration of water-sorptivity. The addition concentrations studied were 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of silica fume and 10% of metakaolin. The concrete formulations which received the addition of silica fume displayed significantly higher results for compressive strength when compared to the control concrete for high water/binder ratios (W/B). In relation to sorptivity properties, the addition of pozzolans significantly reduced the permeability of the mixtures for all the W/B studied. The compressive strength of concrete mixtures with 10% metakaolin was similar to that of silica fume concrete and the sorptivity results were slightly higher. These results show that it is possible to produce concrete mixtures in the Amazon region with higher durability than the ones currently in use and this can be achieved by the use of highly reactive pozzolans such as silica fume and metakaolin.
