Abstract

The creep and shrinkage behavior of high strength silica fume concrete is significantly different from that of conventional concrete. In the present work, five series of long-term tests have been conducted in order to obtain data characterizing the creep and shrinkage behavior of high strength concrete. The mechanisms of autogenous and drying shrinkage, and basic and drying creep are identified, and the results are compared with the predictions of several existing models. It is demonstrated that the models are not always capable of representing the behavior satisfactorily. As a consequence, an experimentally calibrated model is used to predict the long-term structural behavior of simply supported reinforced high-strength concrete beams. Tests were performed on the beams under sealed and unsealed conditions, and show that the predictions are practically identical to the experimental results.
