Abstract

The use of high performance concrete constitutes in an irreversible tendency because of the advantages it presents compared to Group 1 strength ( concrete characteristics strength between 10MPa and 50MPa ), mainly in columns, because the cross sections can be reduced. This paper presents experimental results for columns with rectangular cross sections (15cm x 30cm) models the columns used in building structures. Models with an index of slenderness of 40 and 70 were considered and for all the tested models, the load position defined a problem of a small eccentricity. The results of the tests have shown that the tension distribution hypothesis at the cross section (constitutive relations) used for Group 1 strength should not be considered for Group 2 strength. The work proposes an adequate tension distribution and presents comparative results obtained by other authors. Theoretical and normal experimental loads were equal, while for the factored moments the experimental values were much higher than the theoretical ones.
