Abstract

In view of the advantageous characteristics, the use of high performance concrete, with compression strengths superior to the common reinforced concrete used in building structures in Brazil, has become irreversible. This work presents a theoretical and experimental study developed to analyze the behavior of high strength concrete columns, stressed by axial compression. It has been characterized that the limit state was reached through rupture of the most stressed cross section and proved that the rupture occurred when the core, defined by perimeter considered by the axes of the stirrups, ruptured. Close to the stage of collapsing the column has its ruptured lap defined, a situation of resistance of the core.
