Abstract

The R&D area service life and durability of materials and building products has reached maturity and the application of knowledge on durability and service life in engineering and in management of buildings and the built environment is the great challenge and should stand in focus. The pursuit of Sustainable Development puts into the limelight such issues as life cycle assessment of materials and building products, recycling of materials, use of substitute raw materials etc., and increases the demand for knowledge on degradation factors and processes, life cycle costs and service life data. The concept probably presents the best argument ever for the R&D area. This article accounts for some of the main trends in durability and service life research and also briefly presents the Agenda 21 for Sustainable Construction which has been produced by CIB and partner organisations. Standardisation presents one of the better ways to enter research results onto the market, and it is argued for pre-normative research in support of ongoing standardisation. The work of ISO TC59/SC14 "Design Life" is presented. The article is partly based on a keynote speech to the 8th International Conference on Durability of Building Materials and Components.
