Abstract

This paper is the result of a research project that analyzed low cost houses in Chile under environmental and energy criteria and evaluated some redesign strategies that improved their thermal comfort and energy demand. The tool used for performing the analysis was the computer thermal simulation program TRNSYS. The first part consisted on the analysis of three low cost houses located on the north, centre and south of Chile, in cities with different climate. All cases were houses designed under SERVIU specifications (National Secretary of Housing and Urbanism) including those related to the insulation value of the roof that runs since March 2000. The second part consisted on the redesign of the houses based on the result of the analysis. The redesign strategies were basically of design nature (reduction or enlargement of windows) or a change of materials (increase of insulation and use of double glazing). The results stressed out that the design modifications have a small influence on the reduction of the energy demand of the houses of only up to2%. The most effective strategies were the inclusion of double glazing that resulted in a reduction of up to 22% of the energy demand and the inclusion of insulation (when there was none) that resulted in a reduction of 29% of energy demand.
