Abstract

In order to evaluate the behavior of high strength concrete (HSC) elements subjected to compound bending with a reasonable accuracy, adequate compressive stressstrain relationship of concrete should be adopted. This is particularly important for predicting the structural behavior of columns, elements where the use of HSC is most advantageous. Due to the different parameters influencing the stress-strain relationship of concrete, there are significant differences between the models proposed in literature for this relationship. In this article, eight of those models for plain concrete and concrete confined by reinforcement (case of the core of reinforced concrete columns) are discussed. The stressstrain curves are compared with one another and with available experimental results, and the influences of various parameters on them are discussed. It is shown that there is a need for a concrete stress-strain model based on tests where the testing technique influence is minimized, in order to have more reliable methods for evaluating the strength and ductility of HSC structural elements.
