Abstract

This paper presents a study of chloride penetration in concrete samples modified with pozzolans, fly ash and rice husk ash of different fineness. These were used in substitutions of 25% and 50% by weight of cement. Compressive strength, chloride ion penetration according to ASTM C 1202 and the composition of the pore solution were assessed for each mixture investigated after 28 and 91 days. Results show that chloride penetration in the mixtures with pozzolans was 1.22 to 16.7 times lower than the reference concrete. For a given passing electrical charge in Coulombs, different values of w/cm ratios are obtained, resulting in different compressive strength values. Higher fineness values and/or substitution concentrations yield a decrease in the equivalent alkaline sodium concentration and in the specific conductivity of the pore solution. There is a strong correlation between chloride penetration in a sample and its equivalent alkaline sodium concentration and the conductivity of its pore solution.
