Abstract

Frequency converters (FC), regularly used for industrial applications, have being adopted, in the last years, to drive photovoltaic pumping systems (PVPS), substituting inverters specially designed to operate with photovoltaic (PV) generators. However, information related to experiments, regarding the operation of the FC for applications of that nature, is not widely available in the technical literature. In order to improve the available knowledge about its performance, we determine, in this work, the experimental characteristics of a FC and the best operating voltage of the PV generator for the conditions of the city of Recife (PE-Brasil). Experimental results with the (FC) operating a conventional pumping system driven by a photovoltaic panel show that improvements, in the (FC) operational mode can still be introduced, reaching similar performance to the ones obtained with solar pumping systems. We conclude then that, in terms of cost benefit relations, the FC exhibits effective possibilities to substitute, in practice, the equipment specifically designed for PVPS applications.
