Abstract

Reducing buildings environmental footprints requires integrated approach to design and use phases in order to create buildings that last longer, use resources efficiently, are comfortable and adaptable, and can be dismantled to elongate components service life by reuse and recycling. This effort requires a previous understanding of how buildings affect the environment and how these adverse effects can be reduced. Acting in each stage of buildings’ life-cycle - through effective design and specification, construction, management, demolition and disposal - can bring substantial environmental improvements. The discussion focuses on the role of architectural decision-making process on the environmental impacts generated in pre-building, use/operation and post-building phases. The paper also comments the initiatives to develop frameworks for environmental assessment of buildings and indicates a need for assisting design tools.
