Abstract

Existing concrete structures may sometimes present an unsatisfactory behavior due to deterioration. This could manifest itself by inadequate performance under service loading or low ultimate strength. In such circumstances, the strengthening techniques are a suitable solution. A very attractive repair method for these circumstances involves the bonding of steel plates to the surface of concrete members to be strengthened. The advantages of this technique are the relative simplicity of the procedure, the speed with which it can be carried out and, the small changes in the structural size required. In this paper tests performed on reinforced concrete beams strengthened by the use of steel plates are presented. These plates are bonded to the bottom of the beams by way of an epoxy adhesive and/or bolts. A new strengthening technique, using an specially formulated mortar, is also presented. The test data is compared with values obtained by computational analysis performed by using the finite element method (FEM). The analysis uses plane stress elements with non linear constitutive models to simulate the behavior of materials.
