Resumo

There is currently a large programme of building underway for the primary healthcare sector in the UK. Design plays a major role in this programme as the catalyst for change through the creation of buildings which work well functionally, adopt a patient centred approach, are nice to look at, and are built to last. In this context, requirements management is essential for the development of appropriate buildings. However, there are disparities between the idealised representation of requirements management as proposed by design methodologists and the complex and uncertain circumstances of the real world. This paper describes an empirical study analysing the requirements management in four primary care facilities. It focuses on the process clients and designers went through to capture and define requirements and the difficulties faced. The different roles of requirements for clients and designers are discussed. The findings have implications in describing possible improvement strategies.
