Abstract

Mobile transverse (transect) is the most popular method for air temperature and moisture horizontal profiles determination along sections in the urban canopy layer. The delay between data of successive measurement points is inherent to this method. Especially for the first and the last points, this time delay can be great. Bauru, an inner City located on São Paulo State, has diurnal thermal amplitude bigger than 10°C. A typical mobile transverse crossing its entire urban area in N-S or E-W directions has a total time lag near 1 hour. In this conditions, air temperatures measured at the mobile transverses edges can differ up to 3°C at local 9:00 hours (6:00 GMT) caused by the quickly temperature elevation by this time in the morning. These great differences can be misunderstood with an urban canopy layer heat island. Mobile transverses made at 15:00 (12:00 GMT) and 21:00 hours (18:00 GMT) have lower errors, but not totally regardless. This paper proposes a method to reduce the mobile transverse bias caused by the delay between measurements and shows a case study in Bauru urban area.
