Abstract

This paper describes the procedures and application of a new GIS-based domestic energy, carbon-counting and carbon-reduction model (DECoRuM), developed in a recently completed doctoral study. The DECoRuM model estimates baseline energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from existing dwellings in United Kingdom (UK) and aggregates them to a local scale. This enables it to investigate the potential for local CO2 emission reductions by, and cost-benefits of, deploying energy efficiency measures, low carbon technologies and solar energy technologies at a household and urban scale level. The model is applied to case study dwellings in Oxford (UK), and findings from the model are used to evaluate the potential for the UK housing stock to achieve CO2 emission reductions above 60% as recommended by the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. The DECoRuM tool will assist energy advisers and planners in local authorities to calculate and reduce CO2 emissions in the domestic sector and mitigate effects of climate change.
