Abstract

The interstitium is a dynamic extension of solar-envelope zoning. The solar envelope has been defined as the largest theoretical volume on a building site that does not critically overshadow neighbors, but the size and shape of the envelope need not be fixed. It may contract in winter and expand in summer while still allowing the same period of solar access to the surround. Between the winter envelope and the generally higher summer envelope is an interstitial space, a region of temporality that can accommodate major building adjustments to program and climate. When the interstitium is applied as a zoning device in communities, this dynamic extension of the solar envelope can support the ritual use of space for energy, comfort and choice.
