Abstract

In recent years, there have been a growing number of projects and initiatives developed to promote the use of low and zero energy homes. The widespread adoption of building integrated photovoltaics in Japan has demonstrated that these solar homes can be successful in the marketplace. The US Zero Net Energy Buildings Outreach and Action Plan has resulted in the construction of numerous projects and in the initiation of the Solar Decathlon competition. The Passive House standard has been evaluated in various European countries with many interesting cost-effective low energy projects being demonstrated. The IEA SHC Task 28 has also generated a number of interesting demonstration projects. The Net- Zero Coalition, and the planned Solar Buildings University Research Network in Canada are considering a number of initiatives towards the goal of a net-zero energy home. This paper concludes that there is a need for a concentrated worldwide effort to share information on low and zero energy home projects to accelerate the widespread adoption of successful alternative configurations.
