Abstract

The paper will present the results of a case study dealing with the application of an energy saving approach to the requalification of social housing examples in Rome, concerning the improvement of the physic and environmental features of the covering. The use of pv panels to produce "clean energy" and of solar heating devices to provide hot water and the light interventions proposed inside the dwellings to improve natural ventilation and lighting were tested during the 2nd Summer Academy of Mediterranean Solar Architecture (Rome, July-August 2004). This experience is part of a wider research carried on by DIPSA (Department of Design and Study of Architecture), with the intention of considering the energetic updating of the building not only as a technical intervention but also as an occasion to improve the image of the building in a brand new "eco-friendly" sense. We do believe that the challenge of nowadays is to consider the use of energy saving devices and techniques - both in new and in retrofit interventions - not as something just overlapped, but as something deeply integrated in the design process. This, thanks to a precise design methodology based on analytical and "creative" phases. In the paper we'll describe these phases applied on a case study in Rome.
