Abstract

BEAM ? Building + Environment Analysis Modules is a series of learning modules that shed light on the importance of interactive modes of teaching building sciences curriculum in schools of architecture. This participatory learning modules supplement architectural and general education courses that are focused on understanding the interactions between people, buildings, and the environment. The main objective of these learning modules is to overcome the lack of ?hands-on? experiential approach in teaching technology courses for future generations of architects. This paper reports on the process of development for BEAM as a virtual laboratory for experimenting with real-time data monitoring and building performance analysis website. The equipment needed to develop this virtual laboratory and the prospects of integrating it in architectural design curricula. BEAM is composed of a number of problem-based exercises to help students explore building science concepts such as energy conscious heating and cooling of buildings, solar building design, daylighting, and electrical lighting controls through a series of problem-based exercises and buildings case studies. The modules are designed to provide a vehicle to test and learn these concepts by allowing students to experiment with real-time environmental data from existing buildings in hypothesis based scientific investigations. This ?real-time? research data are collected remotely from public accessible buildings as well as archived environmental data collected from commercial buildings over the course of a typical year. The main place for delivery of BEAM is a virtual laboratory. This laboratory is located on a central web site, where a number of JAVA-based applications, research procedures, real-time and archived environmental data of buildings are available for testing and analysis.
