Abstract

The infrequent diffuse and direct radiation measurements and their integral role in energy simulations, have led to the evolution of a number of regression models for their estimation based on the most frequently measured parameter, global horizontal radiation. In this paper, apart from clearness index (kt), influence of sunshine fraction (SF), cloud cover (CC) and air mass (m) on diffuse fraction of global radiation (k) is studied both qualitatively and quantitatively. It is found that, SF shows a strong bearing on the k-kt relationship followed by CC and then by m. Mono-, bi- and multivariate models are presently developed for the estimation of k. After an exhaustive evaluation procedure, it is established that incorporation of the three parameters (SF, CC and m) in addition to the kt variable, i.e., the multivariate model, improves the accuracy of diffuse radiation estimation over the conventional k-kt models approximately by more than 50%.
