Abstract

This paper presents and analyzes the experimental performance of an improved bi-facially irradiated collector that is used in a solar adsorptive icemaker. The system is equipped with a multi-tubular adsorber integrated to a solar collector and an activated carbon-methanol pair. The solar adsorbing plate is recovered with a non-selective surface, it is painted in matt black with both upper and under parts protect by transparent covers. The tests were carried out in a region of Brazil close to the Equator, on days characterized by the predominant cloud cover degree. Performance parameters calculated from data obtained on a typical clear sky day were compared to those of a Tunisian prototype, tested under dry weather conditions, which uses a one-box flat adsorber with solar selective surface, and the same adsorptive pair. The daily solar thermal efficiency of the present prototype was 38%, while for the Tunisian prototype this parameter was 41%.
