Abstract

Cost effective incorporation of significant thermal mass has been one of the major barriers preventing passive solar homes from becoming main stream in new home construction in this country. DOW Chemical Company, Dukane, Precast, Inc. and others have recently begun to manufacture and market concrete wall systems with insulation sandwiched between to widths of concrete for residential construction. Marketed for resistance to storms, earthquakes and noise, these wall systems have the potential of greatly increasing thermal mass in new home construction. This report analyzes the energy and cost benefits of employing these manufactured concrete wall systems in new home developments. As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Program (BAP), studies were conducted using DOE 2.2 computer simulations. These computer simulations show very significant energy savings for 11 locations across this country for both winter heating and summer cooling. The report also introduces full scale testing of four prototype homes that are under construction in the Southern California desert in which two of the homes are being constructed with exterior concrete sandwich walls.
