Abstract

The U.S. Green Building Council s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System was used to assess the sustainability of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management s Rawlins Field Office Building. The process involved including all design disciplines in the entire design process through early workshops to identify sustainability goals and define the process to achieve them. BLM targeted a LEED Gold certification for the Rawlins Field Office, making it the first LEED-registered building in Wyoming. The building incorporates many sustainable measures including recycled building materials, native plantings to reduce irrigation needs and evaporative cooling to provide energy savings. One of the most revolutionary measures is the use of a wind turbine to provide over 10% of the buildings energy needs. The construction process resulted in the addition and reduction of several LEED credit points and brought to light several areas that could have been improved.
