Abstract

The Hood River County Library (appropriately located in Hood River, Oregon) consists of an older structure that was recently expanded and updated via a major renovation. The design intent for the library addition included the provision and utilization of daylighting and natural ventilation. The ventilation features of the library are showcased in Natural Ventilation in Northwest Buildings and caught the attention of the authors via this publication. In keeping with the traditions of the Vital Signs, Agents of Change, and Tool Day projects, the authors visited the Hood River Library in mid-July 2004 to see how the natural ventilation and daylighting aspects were performing. This paper presents measurements made during this brief investigation, including information gathered from an interview with a librarian. Measured data are compared to prevalent design criteria for lighting and climate control systems.
