Abstract

The status and future development of solar photovoltaic in Russia are considered. Dominant factors, new materials and technologies determining the direction of development and the role of solar energy in future energy generation are identified. The key factors are solar energy conversion efficiency 20%, availability of low cost semiconductor material, operation time of solar power system 50 years, cost of installed capacity not more 1000 US$/kWp, the 24 hours operation time and uniformity of the continuous electricity production by solar cells, ecological safety of PV conversion from manufacturing to unit component utilization. New physical principles of solar energy conversion, new technologies of solar grade silicon and cells manufacturing, modules encapsulation, use of stationary solar concentrators and new method of electric power transmission with solar global power system can provide 60-90% solar energy option in global energy production by the end of this century.
