Abstract

Expert systems have recently stimulated much interest in industry and amongst academics. It is expected that they will be able to solve problems in fields where computers have not offered cost effective solutions, or indeed, have never been tried. The construction industry seems to have great potential in obtaining benefits from recent developments in the field of knowledge engineering. Traditional computing has found limitations in supporting decision making in all stages of the construction process. Many existing problems are not well structured and the knowledge used to solve them originates from the experts practical experience and intuition rather than from well stablish scientific models. This article is concerned with the role expert are able to assume in the construction industry and discusses the main types of expert system application that could be used to improve decision making in construction.
