Abstract

The implantation of permanent water conservation programs in university campi, or in similar scenarios, has been justified by its potential water consumption reduction, considering some expressive characteristics such as area, number of buildings, population and high consumption of water in which multiple activities are developed. Experience has shown that programs should be structured prior to the intervention stage, by means of attribution of responsibilities, general diagnosis of water use and sites characteristics, besides planning of actions of the main benefit return. During the intervention stage, and even after this period, there is a need of a water demand management in order to permanently assure or even to reduce the achieved consumption level. This management should include the continuous determination of consumption profiles, and should allow performing system maintenance procedures in the case of abnormal occurrences. As a case study, this paper presents the Water Conservation Program of the University of São Paulo - PURA-USP (Programa de Uso Racional da Água da Universidade de São Paulo), under a system approach of its structure, implantation and impacts.
