Abstract

The prime goal of this paper is the presentation of a study about the Civil Engineering sector in the city of Juiz de Fora, with special regard to the development of construction designs covering the design actitivies from the very conception through the final delivery to the user. For the accomplishment of this study, data of companies of Juiz de Fora were collected and tabulated, which corresponds to around 35% of the organizations concerned with building construction that deal with services or construction work in the city. What can be observed is that, besides the classical division between those companies of "service" and those of engineering "construction", one has verified that they are still subdivided according to disciplines and specialties and that, in most cases, one only talks about design within the field of "service", there being no mention to the same for the execution. Even with regard to the "service", the so-called architectural, structural, hydraulic, electric and other designs are usually developed by distinct "offices" which have little or no communication among themselves. That characterizes the design as being developed in a fragmented manner, with repercussions in the execution, becoming one of the causes for the re-works, losses and wastes which entail delays, poor quality and a raise in the costs of construction.
