Abstract

This paper presents the analysis and the comparison of results about the effects of wind at a square in Rio de Janeiro city, obtained from computational and experimental simulations (wind-tunnel). The experiments show how different building location and other elements of urban morphology can interfere in ventilation and environmental comfort. These experiments are intended to help professionals and students of architecture and urbanism in understanding and predicting the behaviour of ventilation in urban spaces. Firstly, blocks, representing built environments, were tested in different positions, enabling the observation of wind field changes and the wind effects on the pedestrian level. After that, the experiments were applied to the square model and its immediate surroundings. The experiments allowed the identification of better ventilated areas, helping future interventions aimed at the environment comfort and confirming the suitability of the methodology applied. The recognition of poor ventilated areas followed by a study related to solar radiation can make possible the identification of heat island formation. The result predictions, from design decisions, are a target for testing the application of the sustainable urban environmental principles on planning.
