Abstract

This paper presents techniques and concepts for analysing the influence of building form on environmental impacts at the building and urban scale. This frame of reference is used to detect the relative importance of design decisions. The key variables considered are direct solar impact and shade, wind protection and acceleration, and energy demand for heating, cooling and lighting. These variables are analysed at different seasons of the year. The impacts considered affect the building form under study, the neighbouring buildings and the adjacent outdoor spaces. The analysis is applied to a series of alternative building forms in a typical block found in the traditional orthogonal grid of Buenos Aires.
