Abstract

This paper deals with the environmental history of capital of the Federal government - Brasilia, current capital and center of government. We present the pattern of urban growth which was chosen to be capitals because of the need to consolidate the nation’s territory and develop its wealth. Our aim is to show that the pressure of urban sprawl on the natural resources over and beyond their sustainability capacity, harmed the population, and resulted in an accelerated lost of quality of life; reflected in soil, air and water pollution and in huge energy consumption. The city exclude the poorest from the benefits of urban life, denying them urban infrastructure, social inclusion and shelter. These characteristics are quite apparent in Rio de Janeiro, capital of the Federal government from 1763 to 1960 and, in a subtler manner, in the almost hidden misery of much of the population in the modern, almost futuristic, present capital of the country.
