Abstract

In the near future, pavements design and construction shall comply with ever more severe ecological specifications that will request design, construction and maintenance policies clearly defined and oriented to the environmental management requirements. This article describes the concrete and other cement-based pavements potential contribution to the environment, since they are not hazardous, they add economical and environmental value to the paving industry through recycling of industrial byproducts and construction wastes and debris into pavement itself, and their enhanced durability provides much less maintenance activities and correlated operations. Beginning with considerations about the bad state and performance of the Brazilian road network, the paper analyzes the interaction between concrete and environment, the use of Portland cement in pavements, social and economical aspects of waste and residues storage, concrete and its environmental impact. It is discussed the more adequate kinds of byproducts to be used together with Portland cement. The paper ends by listing the advantages derived from the association between concrete and other naturally aggressive materials to the environment.
