Abstract

This study is part of a comprehensive project analyzing user comfort conditions in state schools in the region of Campinas, SP, Brazil. It is based on the premise that school building projects necessarily should be based on bioclimatic design concepts. Acoustic, lighting, thermal and functional comfort must be considered as well in conjunction at an early stage of design. A method is devised using environmental comfort parameters as a basis to analyze preliminary designs of new school projects. Optimization of these parameters is sought to direct designers in their decision making process and is based on expert assessment levels of each specific comfort requirement. This paper discusses the concept of optimization and shows the preliminary results of ongoing research.
