Abstract

This experimental work aims to evaluate the conduct of durability of the two types of concrete, according to the penetration of chloride ions. One of the concrete is executed with thick sand of reference quartzose of granulometry with thinness module equal to 2.19 and characteristic maximum dimension equal to 4.80mm, and another is executed with thin sand quartzose of granulometry with thinness module less or equal to 1.20 characteristic maximum dimension of 0.60mm, the latter being the “pink sand”, very much used lately as minute aggregate in concrete by concrete makers from the Metropolitan Region of the city of São Paulo. For each concrete family, the aspects of durability of this concrete, focussing on consideration of the microstructure related to the transition zone of the aggregate and the volume of cement paste present. The results obtained show that the concrete executed with thin sand, presented a better performance in relation to the concrete executed with thick sand, according to the Chloride Penetration of Chloride Ions, through the passing charge, having as a reference of comparison, the resistance of axial rupture of 40 MPa, in 28 days.
