Abstract

Saving potable water became the central purpose of many researches and programs around the world. In Brazil, Federal Government launched the National Program against Waste of Water (PNCDA), which shows some ways and methods to save water. Inserted in this context, was also launched the National Program of Quality and Productivity of residence construction (PBQP-H), that generates some Sectorial Programs of Quality, like one specific about Vitreous China Plumbing Fixtures. The main goal of this specific Sectorial Program is to reduce the water flush volume of the water closets, in such a way that, until 2002, this volume will be near 6 liters. This survey of a water closet model that uses a reduced flush volume of discharge is crucial when the goal is to save water, due the consumption of this equipment when compared with the overall in-house consumption (about 30%). This paper presents a field investigation that has been conducted by researchers of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and of the University of São Paulo (USP) with ultra low flush toilets (6 liters per flush), with results about the water saving potentials of these toilets.
