Abstract

This work presents a design proposal for a Tall building, envisioned to operate with lower environmental impact in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The tall building exercise is a diploma project design, developed in the University of Sao Paulo, aiming to question the local architectural practice and test higher standards on environmental performance. A widespread range of qualities and values throughout varies dimensions of the design concept were considered, such as: social demands, energy efficiency, human comfort, direct local environmental impact, indirect global environmental impact, improvement of urban context infrastructure and economic viability. The design process was based on diagnostics and simulations to evaluate local environmental conditions. The architectural concept evolved from analysis of sun masks, shadow simulations and daylighting levels – using the software “Square One Ecotect”™ – and also, wind tunnel modeling, diagnostic of urban morphology and city infra-structure.
