Abstract

The manufacturing process of steel produces a large amount of by-product - the steel slag. The use of this waste in the construction industry, as supplementary material, can result in environmental and economic benefits. The present work evaluates the potential use of steel slags as mineral admixture of concrete, through compressive strength and Brazilian tensile tests. The results of the analysis of the mechanical and physical properties have shown that depending on water/(cement+mineral admixture) ratio, the concrete with added steel slag can be better than reference concrete. However, the experiments of volume stability by "Le Chatelier" method were conducted using ground slags. The results showed the expansion of the specimens through heating method.
