Abstract

One of the main challenges designers have nowadays in town planning is concerned to the urban heat island effect and how to mitigate it for preserving urban thermal comfort. Two aspects of urban fabric are directly related with this effect: urban geometry and building mass (thermal inertia). The incorporation of the building mass parameter in a basic unidimensional energy budget model proved to be efficient in warm and humid urban areas, improving the correspondence between the modeling and the reality. As this model, although being relatively simple, can be laborious to set and start up, because it needs a lot of entry parameters, the incorporation of the building mass contributes to turn its setup yet slower. The extensive calculation of the building mass can be hasten by the use of GIS (Geographical Information System) software, helping to finish the model setup phase sooner. As thermal storage in buildings is a function of density, it can be controlled by the urban legislation, so applications that predict the climatic impact of this parameter can contribute to city planning, helping planners to take better decisions regarding the urban environmental quality.
