Abstract

The software Solum has been developed to model the coupled heat and moisture transfer in porous soils. It has been conceived to be a fast simulation software with a very user-friendly interface so that to stimulate a larger number of users. The Solum models predict temperature and moisture content profiles within soils under different sort of boundary conditions for both diffusion and capillary regimes of moisture migration, which can be easily read by building simulation codes and provide important information on potential of passive cooling loads. Nevertheless, soil simulations may require extremely high computer run times due to their elevated hygrothermal storage capacity and to their dimensions. Thus, sensitivity analyses of time step, and grid size refinement carried out in terms of temperature and moisture content profiles, for the Test Reference Year weather data of Curitiba-Brazil.
