Abstract

Photovoltaics systems have been implemented for remote rural electrification in Algeria since 1985. This paper investigates a new approach: the incorporation of photovoltaics onto the building fabric. One of the objectives of this study is to investigate the supply of electricity for space conditioning systems provided by photovoltaics. A building model was generated by analysing typical building construction types in Algeria. This building model is subjected to a thermal load analysis using a monthly admittance procedure programme. Different mounting options of photovoltaic arrays onto the building model are tested and compared with each other using a photovoltaic design tool (PVSYST). The preliminary results of this research project are summarised in this paper. This area of work has not been previously investigated before and represents a novel step in the integration of photovoltaics into the built environment.
