Abstract

Permeability is an important parameter for evaluation of the refractory castables quality. Both, drying stage during processing and corrosion on use, are ruled by the same phenomenon: the percolation of fluids through the porous structure. However, if in the first case the fast and controllable elimination of water is desirable to avoid mechanical damage and even the castable explosion during the heat treatment, it is also important for the castable durability to avoid the penetration of corrosive fluids that may deteriorate chemically the structure. In both cases, the temperature is a main factor ruling the porous structure formation and also the interactions between castable and percolating fluid. Nevertheless, permeability measurements are usually carried out at room temperature and the results are extrapolated to the temperature of interest, without any concern about the structure modification (thermal expansion, etc.). In this work, an equipment was developed to evaluate the refractory castable permeability for air flow in temperatures up to 800 °C. The objective was to investigate the dynamic modifications in the permeability constants, allowing a more realistic relationship with drying and molten metal attack parameters.
