Abstract

Buildings planned and built nowadays will not be operated (heated) any more by fossil fuels at the end of their lifetime, while resources of oil will last for about 45 years, natural gas for about 50 years. Therefore “the use of solar energy is not about fashion, it is about survival” (Sir Norman Foster, British Architect). At buildings solar energy can be used either for direct heating purposes (solar thermal systems) or for the conversion of sunlight into electricity (photovoltaic systems). The collectors (or PV modules in the case of photovoltaic systems) can be mounted on the roof or on the facade, even substituting conventional building structure. While simulation and design software exists for a large number of purposes in architecture and civil engineering, an astonishingly small amount is available for the integration of solar energy systems into the building structure. One of the few programs is PV*SOL, which allows the design, planning and simulation of photovoltaic systems. An economical analysis of the whole system is performed as well, considering actual interest rates and funding.
